Beethoven's songs may go unnoticed in the mighty shadow cast by Fischer-Dieskau's three-record volume with
Harmut Holl (HMV EX270042-3, 4/85); and that would be a pity. Ian Partridge is a sensitive singer, very closely at one
with Richard Burnett, and there are songs in which his lightness and elegance of voice can win expressiveness from
Beethoven's simpler and more domestic songs in a manner that is different from Fischer-Dieskau's enormous
interpretative power. Even in An die ferne Geliebte he manages to make a distinctive and tender impression that can
fairly offer an alternative to other interpretations, including Fischer-Dieskau's superb performance. All these
songs, incidentally, are represented in the HMV album. Two I prefer in Partridge's performances are firstly, the
charming little Herrosee setting ''Ich liebe dich'' (as it is given here from the opening words: the
HMV booklet gives the poem its title, ''Zartliche Liebe''): Partridge touches off a simplicity, and
an unassuming warmth and feeling, which exactly match the blithe words and Beethoven's less remarkable pieces and
one of which Fischer-Dieskau makes slightly heavy weather. Partridge nips through it skilfully, with the fortepiano
dancing attendance.
The instrument, a Viennese fortepiano of about 1800, has an enchanting tone, and certainly in
these simple, early songs it is beautifully suited to the music. Burnett uses it with affection and understanding, and
both artists are well recorded. There is a sleeve-note and summaries, but; alas, no leaflet with full texts and
translations.'
